Activity & Discussion Questions:

      How do you teach students at the different levels, starting at emergent, how to read?
      How can you support teachers support students through this development?


Outcome:  Understanding on how to teach students how to read, understanding the reading work that happens at the different levels (up to M), and being able to identify the challenges each band of levels presents to students.

  1. How do you teach students at different levels, starting at emergent, how to read?
    -Use of balanced literacy instruction
    - Word study (word sorts, making words, Elkonin boxes at the emergent and early levels, direct instruction of vocabulary, vocabulary instruction through context and structure.
    -Text Analysis through whole class interactive read alouds which include active reading, close reading, interactive notebooks, and shared reading and oral language (more time spent in shared reading at emergent and early levels).
    -Writing instruction includes evidence-based writing, interactive and shared writing, use and analysis of mentor texts, independent writing, and writer's workshop (includes the writing process- planning or prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing).
    -Writing across the curriculum (math, science, social studies)
    -Guided Reading which includes small group instruction based on student DRA levels and/or specific student instructional needs, literacy stations (independent reading time), strategy groups (partner reading).

    How can you support teachers/support students through this development?
    - Supporting teachers...conversations with other teachers involved in the literacy process about what is working and what can be tweaked to improve our practice as teachers of literacy, working in vertical and horizontal teams, Units of Study discussion groups, blogging.
    -Supporting students...continually learning and researching best practices, working with students at their appropriate instructional level.
